Georgia Golf Courses by City

There are over 520 courses in the state, but there is no question that Augusta National, home of the Masters, is the premier course among them all.

What makes Augusta National such a beloved course? Perhaps because it was created by the legendary Bobby Jones in 1930 for his golfing friends. He wanted the course to have some of the best features of championship courses he had played during his career. In 1934, Jones decided to invite some of his friends to play in a tournament, and thus was born the Masters, now in its 75th year.

Augusta National has many traditions that endear it to golfers, from the names of Georgia flora given to the various holes (#5 is the Magnolia hole), place names like the “Amen Corner” (difficult holes at 11, 12 and 13), which is allegedly what golfers shout if they successfully meet the challenge. The most treasured tradition is the donning of the green sport coat awarded to the winner of the Masters Tournament each year.

There are many courses in Georgia which are restricted to the gentry, like Atlanta’s Peachtree Golf Club or the Landings Club in Savannah. But there are also wonderful public courses in the state, such as the Golf Course at Cuscowilla on Lake Oconee, in Eatonton and the beautiful Sea Island Golf Club on St. Simons Island.
